Quotes

I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.
– Michael Jordan

I hated every minute of training, but I said, ‘Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life a champion’.
– Muhammad Ali

I’m proud of the way I’ve dealt with setbacks. It’s hard when you feel down and you think, ‘Why is the world doing this to me?’ But you have to pick yourself up again. That’s what makes you a better athlete.”
Jessica Ennis Hill

I’m like a ‘comeback kid’ – you can’t keep me down for long! It is really important that we get more women doing exercise and being active, and those that have taken up boxing or boxing training will definitely find that it has a really positive impact on their health, fitness and well-being.
– Nicola Adams.

Purpose

The purpose of the Physical Education curriculum at Rushey Mead Academy is to enable all students to access physical activity and competitive sport, breaking down barriers to participation and inspiring all scholars to succeed and excel.

Our PE department extends many varied opportunities to compete in sport and engage in physical activities that help to build character and to embed core values, such as fairness and respect. The curriculum aims to ensure that all scholars develop the ability to excel in a broad range of physical activities and are physically active for sustained periods of time. PE is a vehicle for social change, enriching lives through sporting experiences, increasing the social and cultural capital of our scholars’ and inspiring scholars to lead a healthy and active lifestyle with skills that will allow them to succeed in life after school. There are extensive opportunities to compete in sport and other activities that help to build character and to embed values such as fairness and respect.

The curriculum aims to ensure that all students develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities and are physically active for sustained periods of time so that they develop a love of sport and a clear understanding of the need to continue to be active into adulthood.

At Rushey Mead we want our students to “DIVE” into PE;

Develop competence and confidence across a range of sports and physical activity.

Increase knowledge of sport and physical activity.

Value physical activity and prepare all scholars for success in life.

Enthuse and empower all to engage in physical activity for life.

Key Stage 3 Features and Summary

At KS3 we aim to develop skills and techniques that can be applied in different activities. Students study P.E. for two 1 hour lessons per week in Year 7 and experience a broad range of activities covering all areas of the National Curriculum. They start to make decisions about their performance and take on different roles such as leader, official and coach. Information technology is now an important aspect of planning, performing and evaluating performance.

In KS3, Dance is taught within the PE curriculum on a rotation system. Click below for more information on what is included:

All students partake in 2 X 1 hour lessons of core Physical Education at KS4. The faculty also offer students the opportunity to study OCR Cambridge Nationals Sport or GCSE PE in their option choices.

Core PE

All students have the opportunity to undertake the Rushey Mead Sports Leader Award in Year 10 as part of the progressive Sports Leadership Pathway developed during KS3. They are assessed on their ability to plan, organise and lead their peers in a variety of sports activities. The students are also able utilise the learning to volunteer at local sports clubs and organisations to improve their CV and enhance their potential to gain places at colleges and universities.

We aim to improve the physical literacy and efficiency of all students whilst providing enjoyment. Students are taught in their teaching groups and there is an element of choice in provision to allow students to partake in physical activity in an enjoyable environment.

Co-curricular Opportunities

The PE Faculty plays a major role in the provision of activities outside normal timetable hours.  We consider this to be an important aspect of the education of the students and an opportunity to further extend and challenge all students. All members of the faculty are involved in delivering extra-curricular activities, and there is an extensive range of activities offered. All students are able to participate in activities planned for their year group. The extra-curricular provision timetable is shared with the students and parents via our newsletters and is also displayed on the PE notice boards and plasma screens across the school

We value our students’ opinions and we regularly consult with students and offer them the opportunities they desire.
