Supporting Young Carers at Rushey Mead Academy

A young carer is a person under 18 who provides or intends to provide care for another person in their family. Examples of this are:

  • Chronic or terminal illness
  • Mental illness
  • Problematic use of alcohol or substances

Young carers may take on a variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Cooking, cleaning, or shopping
  • Giving medication or providing physical care
  • Looking after siblings
  • Offering emotional support

Because of these responsibilities, young carers often take on roles that are usually expected of adults. We recognise the challenges this can bring and are committed to providing the right support for them.

At Rushey Mead Academy, approximately 2% of our students are young carers and  we support them through:

  • A daily breakfast club
  • Regular support sessions with Ms Maria Jones, Operational Lead for Young Carers and Year teams.
  • Homework support every Tuesday and Thursday from 3:00–4:00pm
  • Monthly selfcare sessions

We also work closely with the LCFC Young Carers Coordinator, Tina Shah, to provide additional extracurricular activities and holiday clubs, giving our young carers valuable opportunities to relax, have fun, and feel supported.

If you feel your child may be a young carer, please do not hesitate to contact Ms Maria Jones, Operational Lead for Young Carers, at Rushey Mead Academy.
